The Ukraine has begun delivery of grain to Egypt, as several countries have lost their harvests this year due to heavy rains and flooding:

August 28th, 2010 The Editor

Reported by: Emon CRWE Newswire Middle East correspondent.

The Ukrainian agricultural producers began to supply grain to Egypt, said Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Slauta.

“It turns out there are people who have found a role, and 21 thousand tons of rye headed to Egypt for deliver”, - said the official and stated: “It’s wonderful.”

We note that adverse weather conditions have called into doubt the prospects of harvests in the Ukraine. Projections for the supply of grain was lowered to 40-42 million tons, while in 2009, grain collected was 46 million tons.

Earlier, international experts had drawn attention to the fact that the Ukrainian government has imposed non-tariff barriers to trade, which actually stopped the export of grain from the country, while weakening the international reputation of the Ukraine and reducing its tax revenues

Portugal’s positive Bond auction silences critics

August 27th, 2010 The Editor

Reported by: Emon CRWE Newswire Middle East correspondent.

Portugal’s Treasury and Government Debt Agency raised EUR1.301 billion, more than planned, at a bond auction on Wednesday, at only slightly higher yields than before.

Investors have chosen to ignore Standard & Poor’s downgrade of Ireland which normally affects the world view of Portugal. The auction came amid widening yield spreads for euro zone marginal bond issuers which includes Portugal and Ireland.

Economists concur that Portugal has no payment duties for the rest of the year but its budget cutting efforts have yet to align with Government ambitions. This is still a good result for the Treasury as austerity measure start to bite and an upbeat Prime Minister continues to spread calm in the market.

UK - Gold price reaches new high

August 27th, 2010 The Editor

Reported by: Emon CRWE Newswire Middle East correspondent.

The price of gold is predicted to remain high for the rest of this year as it is in demand by investors and for jewelers, according to the World Gold Council.

The cost has skyrocketed during the recession as gold is perceived to be a safe investment. Demand has been strong across Europe, rising in the second quarter of the year to 84.8 tones which comprised 35 per cent of global demand for small gold bars and coins.

During the second quarter, the gold price soared to a new high of US$1,261 an ounce.

The largest jewellery market remains in India where demand dropped only 2 per cent compared to last year. Purchases from China increased to 75.4 tones and if the government implements its recent proposal to relax restrictions on gold, demand from consumers could rise considerably.

More Brits Extradited to Courts in Europe

August 27th, 2010 The Editor

By Emon

CRWE Newswire Mideast Correspondent

European warrants for the arrest of British citizens have increased to nearly three a day in the last year.

A total of 1,032 individuals in the UK were arrested and extradited at the request of European prosecutors while, in 2009, there were 683 and, in 2004, only 24. The Home Office anticipates that the number will rise again next year.

The European Arrest Warrant system was introduced under the previous UK government, but the then-Home Secretary, David Blunkett, admitted he had been “insufficiently sensitive” about its use. Foreign prosecutors do not need to present evidence in a British court; instead, the issuing of a warrant for the person to be “surrendered” is sufficient.

The UK is also entitled to deploy European Arrest Warrants to call accused people to the UK and used that power to recall 98 people in the same period.

The thrust behind the Europe-wide initiative is to allow people to return to their own countries but to be called to account for alleged crimes at a later date, rather than being behind bars in a foreign country.

Campaigners, however, fear that the proceedings in some countries have lower standards and safeguards than those in the UK. In some cases, people have been charged with offenses that might not be prosecuted in the UK. However, some actions not deemed criminal in the UK are considered so in other nations.

France Deports Roma to Romania

August 26th, 2010 The Editor

By Emon

CRWE Newswire Mideast Correspondent

French authorities have begun to expel the Roma residing illegally in the country.

It is expected that the first aircraft with the gypsies, who are illegal immigrants, landed in Romania today. At the same time, 79 people who have agreed to voluntarily leave France and return to their historic homeland, will receive 300 Euros from the government. By the end of August, France will have deported about 700 Roma, the BBC reports.

This step should enable the authorities to oust the nearly 300 camps of Roma illegals in the country within the next three months. The French Government stressed that these “hosts” are “breeding grounds for illegal trade, shocking standards of living, begging, crime and prostitution.”

At the same time, Romania expressed concern about what might result from the ousting.

“I am concerned about the possible social consequences of such actions, in particular, the risk of populism and racism in the society in the context of the crisis in the global economy,” said the Romanian Foreign Minister.
